PE

Intent

At Tower View, Physical Education (PE) is an integral part of our curriculum and we strive to create a culture which aims to inspire an active generation to enjoy and achieve in PE. Our belief is that PE, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and lead a healthy life. We intend to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in developing essential life skills. We want to teach children vital skills that will keep them safe, such as swimming. We also strive to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed lifelong values. Our PE curriculum aims to improve and celebrate the wellbeing, fitness and sporting achievements of all children at Tower View, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning of values and disciplines PE promotes.

Implementation

PE at Tower View provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure. The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Children also have the opportunity to attend after school clubs. Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area and as many children as possible are given these opportunities. These events develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children, as well as encouraging physical development and improving wellbeing.  Each year, a swimming pool is hired for a period of at least 3 weeks and children in year 3-6 will get the opportunity for regular swimming lessons during this period.

Impact

The children complete each key stage with a high proficiency in each aspect of PE. Children are aware of the link between physical activity and good mental health and understand its significance as part of a healthy lifestyle. We ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement in order to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise. All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson. We strive for all children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they can pursue outside of school and in their future life.

House Sport

Over the year, we aim to have at least 1 house based intra-school sports competition each term.  This gives more children the opportunity to take part in competitive sport.

Dance

Dance is a central part of PE at Tower View.  Each year there will be at least 1 whole school dance assembly.  For this, classes will learn and perform a dance for the school to enjoy.
